How to Flatten Your Tummy...

There are a lot of misconceptions about what exercises are best to recondition the abdominals post pregnancy.

A lot of people just want to do a few crunches and think that they will get a flat stomach from doing this. Unfortunately, crunches do not flatten the stomach.
All crunches do is train the upper portion of the external Rectus Abdominus muscle, which may actually push the abdominals out. The function of this muscle is to actually bend you forward and bring your ribs closer to your pelvis.

One of the main muscles you want to target are the deep abdominal muscles, the Transverse Abdominals. These are the muscles known as “the core” muscles. Actually, these are the true core muscles. These days, anything to do with the abdominals is referred to as “the core” which couldn’t be further from the truth.

One of the reasons why most hospitals, consultants, midwives and doctors tell you to do your pelvic floor exercises before and after giving birth is to actually help to recondition your abdominals post pregnancy. Sounds strange? So how does this work? Well actually, the pelvic floor muscles, your deep abdominals and the small stabilising muscles around the spine are connect to each other by the way of a reflective loop. This means that if your pelvic floor muscles are working, your deep abdominal muscles should be working which means that your spinal stabilisers will also be working.

They all work together to stabilise your pelvis and lower back. And from a pure aesthetic point of view, it helps to flatten your abs. So if you have been doing your pelvic floor exercises, your abdominals will have a head start when it comes back to getting them back in shape.

Because everyone is different, assessing just where you are at is an important part of determining at what level to begin your exercise programme at. Once this is determined, it is a matter of targeting the correct muscles in the correct manner to get the results that you want. That is where we come in. At Equilibrium Personal Training we understand what needs to be done to get your body back.
